Push for Negotiations

During a press briefing aboard Air Force One, U.S. President Donald Trump called on Ukraine to accelerate its move to the negotiating table. This high-stakes diplomatic push comes as trilateral talks involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States are scheduled for February 17-18 in Geneva. The Russian delegation has already departed for the Swiss city, armed with preliminary instructions from the Kremlin, while the Ukrainian delegation has also arrived on site.

Delegation Composition and Stakes

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that the delegates will operate under the so-called Anchorage Formula. The Kremlin has officially acknowledged that the negotiations will address territorial issues. However, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russia is likely to present demands that extend far beyond this scope. Moscow is expected to insist on international recognition of occupied territories and broader political and security concessions.

The Ukrainian delegation representing the country at the Geneva talks includes several key officials:

  • Head of the President's Office, Kyrylo Budanov,
  • First Deputy Head of the President's Office, Sergiy Kyslytsya,
  • Head of the parliamentary faction 'Servant of the People,' David Arakhamia,
  • Deputy Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, Vadym Skibitsky.

The next round of trilateral negotiations is set to begin on February 17, with observers eagerly awaiting the outcome of these critical meetings. These talks represent a pivotal moment in diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Given the Kremlin's stated focus on territorial issues, the results could significantly shape the future of the region and international policy. Analysts will be closely monitoring the proceedings for any potential compromises that emerge from the negotiation process.
