Controversy Surrounding Putin’s G20 Invitation
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has openly criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the upcoming G20 summit in Miami. Kallas highlighted that the invitation is especially troubling in light of recent charges brought against Russian intelligence officers in the United States.
"Hearing that Trump invited Putin to the G20 was very difficult, especially considering that just days ago, Russian intelligence officers were charged with killing Americans on U.S. soil," Kallas stated.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Putin’s invitation following discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New York. The G20 summit is set for December 14-15 at Trump’s Miami golf resort. Should Putin attend, it will mark his first in-person G20 meeting since 2019.
Accusations Against Russian Intelligence Agencies
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed charges against five individuals linked to Russian intelligence services, accusing them of conspiracy to finance terrorism and orchestrate assassinations. According to investigators, this network targeted Kremlin critics worldwide and planned attacks on civilian and military infrastructure in European nations supporting Ukraine. All five suspects remain in Russia and have not been apprehended.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also expressed willingness to meet Putin at the summit if the Russian leader receives an invitation from the U.S. Kallas added, "Are these intelligence officers acting independently, or are they following Vladimir Putin’s orders? I can tell you: they take their commands directly from President Putin."
This development underscores the complex geopolitical tensions defining current international relations, where diplomatic engagements are often fraught with conflict. The decision to invite Putin has alarmed European leaders, particularly against the backdrop of serious accusations against Russian operatives.
