Trump's Statement on a Potential Peace Deal

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has asserted that both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin are ready to agree on ending the war. Trump made these remarks aboard Air Force One while returning to Washington from Davos, where he met with the Ukrainian leader on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum.

Technical-Level Trilateral Meeting Planned in the UAE

According to reports, Ukraine, the United States, and the Russian Federation are planning a technical-level trilateral meeting. This meeting is scheduled to take place in the coming days in the United Arab Emirates. The Ukrainian delegation that has traveled to the UAE includes:

  • National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov,
  • Head of the President's Office Kyrylo Budanov,
  • Deputy Head of the President's Office Serhiy Kyslytsya,
  • Head of the 'Servant of the People' parliamentary faction David Arakhamia,
  • Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andrii Hnatov.

As reported by the Financial Times, the U.S. and Ukraine plan to propose an 'energy truce' to Russia during the talks in the UAE. Concurrently, Sky News reports suggest a Russian delegation is likely to appear in Abu Dhabi. Trump noted that

"all the parameters are known"
and added that
"we are not discussing anything new"
. He also expressed sympathy for the Ukrainian people, stating that
"the people of Ukraine are really having a hard time"
. This comes amid a protracted conflict that has caused significant global economic and security disruptions.

The technical-level meeting in the UAE could represent a significant step toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. This event underscores ongoing international efforts to facilitate dialogue between the warring parties. An agreement on an energy truce could lay the groundwork for further negotiations, potentially reducing regional tensions and opening a path to broader peace initiatives. However, the success of these efforts hinges on the willingness of all participants to compromise and engage in constructive dialogue.
