Norway's Manager Takes Aim at Scotland's Decision

Ståle Solbakken, the head coach of Norway's national team, has sharply criticized Scotland for backing out of a scheduled friendly on June 9. Solbakken expressed his frustration, pointing out that it was unprofessional for the Scottish manager to have the team's administrator notify him of the cancellation after training had already ended, rather than making a personal phone call. He emphasized that the injuries cited by the Scots could not have occurred during their final practice session, a detail he finds deeply disappointing.

“It’s unprofessional. But we have to live with it,” - Ståle Solbakken.

World Cup Group Stage Opponents

Norway will compete in Group I at the 2026 World Cup, facing France, Senegal, and Iraq. Their opening match is set for June 16 (the night of June 17 in Ukraine) against Iraq, taking place in Foxborough, Massachusetts, USA.

Scotland has been placed in Group C for the 2026 World Cup, alongside Brazil, Morocco, and Haiti. The Scots will play their first game against Haiti on the night of June 14 in the Boston metropolitan area of the United States.

Notably, Spain's coaching staff chose not to include any players from Real Madrid in their World Cup squad, while Barcelona contributed seven players to the national team. Additionally, Dick Advocaat has returned to lead Curaçao ahead of the World Cup, guiding the national team onto the global stage.

Scotland's withdrawal from the friendly has sparked frustration among other teams, as such matches are crucial for fine-tuning tactics and building momentum before major tournaments. This incident could also strain relationships between coaching staffs and national federations, as it may be perceived as a lack of seriousness in competitive preparation. Both squads are now intensifying their preparations for the World Cup, making every stage of training all the more critical.

This situation adds to the challenges facing Scotland as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup, especially after the loss of a key player due to injury. Such setbacks can significantly impact a team's performance and strategy in crucial matches, highlighting the importance of maintaining squad integrity during this pivotal time.
