Health Scare for Mircea Lucescu

Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, collapsed during a technical meeting held before a training session. The incident occurred at the national team's camp, where he received immediate first aid from the medical staff. He was subsequently hospitalized for further examination, with doctors reporting his condition as stable.

The 80-year-old Lucescu is now expected to miss the upcoming friendly match against Slovakia, scheduled for March 31st in Bratislava. This match carries significant weight for both sides, as each team looks to rebound from recent setbacks in their World Cup qualification campaigns. Romania finished third in their UEFA qualifying Group H, behind Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and recently lost a narrow 1-0 playoff semi-final to Turkey, with the sole goal scored by Ferdi Kadıoğlu.

A Storied Coaching Career

Mircea Lucescu boasts a long and highly decorated coaching career. He began as a player-coach at 'Corvinul' in 1979 and first took charge of the Romanian national team in 1981, serving for five years. Lucescu led Romania at Euro 1984 and has managed a host of prominent clubs across Europe, including:

  • Dinamo Bucharest
  • The Italian clubs Pisa, Brescia, Reggiana, and Inter Milan
  • The Turkish giants Galatasaray and Beşiktaş

His trophy cabinet includes two league titles in both Romania and Turkey, and he won the UEFA Super Cup with Galatasaray. His most successful spell came at Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk, where he secured eight Ukrainian Premier League titles, six Ukrainian Cups, seven Ukrainian Super Cups, and the UEFA Cup in the 2008/09 season. He later coached Dynamo Kyiv, winning the Ukrainian league, cup, and super cup.

Lucescu returned to manage the Romanian national team in August 2024. The team had earned a playoff spot thanks to a perfect record of six wins in the UEFA Nations League. His sudden health issue has caused considerable concern among Romanian football supporters, given his profound influence on the squad. His potential absence poses a significant challenge for the team's preparation as they aim to build for future international competitions.
