Subway and Rail Services Grind to a Halt as Georgia Faces Its Third Blackout in a Fortnight

Widespread Power Failure Sweeps Georgia

A major electricity outage struck Georgia on August 5, 2026, marking the third such failure within two weeks. The power went down at 20:10 local time (19:10 Kyiv time) across the capital Tbilisi and several other regions simultaneously. According to the State Electric System of Georgia, nearly all major transmission lines were disconnected.

The disruption brought rail transport to a standstill, including a train running from Zugdidi to Tbilisi. Tbilisi's metro also suspended operations temporarily, and water supplies were cut off for several hours because pumps lost power. Giorgi Pangani, a member of the energy regulatory commission, said the blackout occurred while generating units at the Enguri Hydroelectric Plant were being tested. He explained:

"I want to report that today the national power system carried out trial runs of the Enguri HPP units. These tests were designed to identify and assess weak points in the grid, taking into account the failures of July 24 and 25." Giorgi Pangani

Electricity supply began to be restored in parts of Tbilisi, notably Vake and Saburtalo, as well as in Kutaisi, Mtskheta, and Saguramo. Earlier major grid collapses had occurred on July 24 and July 25. Levan Mebonia, director of the Enguri HPP, attributed those outages to an emergency shutdown of the 500 kV high-voltage transmission line known as "Imereti." Pangani added that "a detailed examination and assessment of the incident is currently underway to determine the exact causes and prevent any recurrence."

Growing Strain on the Energy Network

The repeated blackouts highlight serious vulnerabilities in Georgia's electricity infrastructure that demand urgent attention. Frequent power failures carry significant risks for both the economy and the daily lives of citizens. Since these breakdowns have emerged against the backdrop of testing generating units, they point to potential technical flaws that must be addressed to avoid similar disruptions down the road.

The forthcoming analysis of what exactly triggered these failures could provide a basis for modernizing the system and strengthening its long-term reliability.
