Search for 10-Year-Old Girl Swept Out to Sea Near Odesa Enters Third Day

Третій день пошуків десятирічної дівчинки, яка зникла в морі поблизу Одеси.

Odesa Region: Child Missing After Being Carried Away by Wind

Rescue teams are now in their third day searching for a 10-year-old girl who was swept out to sea on an inflatable ring near the village of Sychavka, just outside Odesa. The child disappeared while swimming at an unguarded beach with her great-grandmother. Authorities report that a sudden gust of wind caused the incident. So far, teams have scoured 6 kilometers of coastline, 210 hectares of the water's surface, and 4.5 hectares of the seabed.

Specialists involved in the operation include:

  • divers
  • rescue workers
  • psychologists
  • drone operators

It is critical to note that swimming at unofficial beaches is strictly prohibited. The lack of lifeguard stations and unverified shoreline conditions pose extreme risks to visitors. As the State Emergency Service of Ukraine warns,

“a place that seems cozy at first glance can become a scene of tragedy in an instant.”
Using inflatable flotation devices in such areas only doubles the danger.

Tragic Incidents in Kyiv Region

Separately, the Kyiv region has recorded 12 cases of train-surfing among teenagers since the start of 2026. One of these ended in tragedy: 12-year-old Sviatoslav Andrusenko died in the hospital after fighting for his life for over four months following a car accident in Kryvyi Rih. Sviatoslav Andrusenko was struck by a judge while crossing a pedestrian crosswalk; he attended Kryvyi Rih Gymnasium No. 122.

The ongoing search for the missing girl underscores the urgent need to follow water safety rules, especially at unguarded beaches where risks are significantly higher. A lack of proper oversight in these areas can lead to devastating outcomes, as seen in this case. Meanwhile, road accidents involving teenagers in the Kyiv region highlight the parallel need for stronger pedestrian safety measures, particularly in high-traffic zones. These incidents demand greater public and governmental attention to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The ongoing search for the missing girl highlights the dangers associated with unguarded beaches. Similar incidents have raised concerns about water safety along the coast. For more details on another recent case involving a girl swept out to sea, you can read about it here.
