Foreigners who have legal grounds for residence in Austria can qualify for citizenship after six years instead of the standard ten under certain conditions. One of the grounds is at least three years of volunteering in a socially beneficial non-profit organization. This is reported by The Local.

The volunteering activity must demonstrate the applicant's sustainable personal integration. At the same time, it does not replace other requirements: the general conditions for naturalization must be met, and the appropriate application must be submitted.

What volunteering counts for Austrian citizenship

It involves voluntary unpaid work for at least three years. The organization must meet the legislative criteria for public benefit, and the applicant's activities should assist with their integration into Austria.

Membership in the organization alone is not sufficient. It is necessary to explain what work the person did and why it was beneficial to society. The law provides for written justifications from both the applicant and the respective institution.

The documents should describe:

  • the period of participation in the volunteering activity;
  • specific tasks and responsibilities;
  • the public benefit of the work done;
  • the significance of this experience for integration.

These requirements are stipulated by Austrian citizenship law. At the same time, choosing a country for long-term residence requires distinguishing between temporary protection, residence permits, and naturalization: these are different legal procedures.

What other requirements apply for naturalization after six years

The applicant must have legally and continuously lived in Austria for at least six years. According to the state portal, the stay outside the country must not exceed 20% of the relevant period.

In addition to proving integration, general requirements remain:

  • knowledge of the German language;
  • sufficient regular income;
  • compliance with requirements regarding convictions and offenses;
  • knowledge of the democratic structure and history of Austria;
  • compliance with rules regarding the termination of previous citizenship, if there is no exception.

Six-year naturalization is also available for other grounds. For example, the official portal separately mentions confirmed knowledge of German at B2 level. Volunteering is one of the options for proving integration, not a mandatory condition for every applicant.

Ukrainians can also check their compliance with these requirements. However, having temporary protection alone does not guarantee citizenship: the basis and duration of legal residence and individual circumstances matter.

The review is handled by the citizenship division of the relevant federal state government. The preparation of documents for this procedure differs from contacting Ukrainian consular services: the decision on naturalization is made by Austrian authorities.
