Strong Start for Ukrainian Tennis Players at the WTA 1000 Event in Madrid

Three Ukrainian competitors have successfully moved past the opening round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. Daria Snigur, Yuliia Starodubtseva, and Anhelina Kalinina delivered solid performances, while Dayana Yastremska and Oleksandra Oliynykova were eliminated. In the second round, they will be joined by Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk, who also secured spots in the main draw.

Results from the first round:

  • Daria Snigur defeated Australia’s Daria Kasatkina with a score of 6:3, 3:6, 7:6.
  • Yuliia Starodubtseva competed against Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima, winning 3:6, 6:1, 3:6.
  • Anhelina Kalinina advanced by beating Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova 6:2, 5:7, 6:2.

Unfortunately, Dayana Yastremska lost to Argentina’s Solana Sierra 6:7, 6:7, and Oleksandra Oliynykova fell to Switzerland’s Simona Waltert 5:7, 0:6.

What’s Next in the Second Round

In the next stage, Daria Snigur will face Poland’s Iga Swiatek, currently ranked fourth in the world. Yuliia Starodubtseva is set to play against Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian, who holds the 29th spot. Anhelina Kalinina will go up against Czech player Marie Bouzková, ranked 23rd. Elina Svitolina, seeded seventh, will take on Hungary’s Anna Bondár, while Marta Kostyuk, seeded 26th, will compete against Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva.

Additionally, seven Ukrainian players have qualified for the main draw of Roland Garros, scheduled from May 24 to June 7. Those players are:
