Claiming Unpaid Pension Funds
In April, some Ukrainians may be eligible to receive pension funds that were owed to a deceased relative at the time of their death, sometimes informally called a "thirteenth pension." This is not a bonus payment but rather money that was accrued by the pensioner but not paid out due to their passing. While pension payments stop upon death, any funds already calculated for that period do not vanish and can be claimed by eligible family members.
The right to claim these funds belongs to family members who lived with the pensioner at the time of death, as well as non-working relatives who were financially dependent on them. The payment covers the period up to and including the month of the death. If no eligible relative applies in time, or if no such relatives exist, the unpaid amount becomes part of the deceased's general estate. This process is particularly relevant for families navigating financial hardship after a loss.
Procedure for Applying
For pensions assigned to military personnel, a separate deadline applies: the application must be submitted no later than six months after the death. Applications can be made in person at a Pension Fund service center or online via the government's electronic services portal. Online submission requires a qualified electronic signature and scanned copies of the necessary documents. If the applicant does not have a bank account, the funds can be received via a money transfer system at a bank branch.
The required documents for claiming unpaid pension funds include:
- Application form
- Passport
- Death certificate of the pensioner
- Proof of family relationship
- Bank account details
- Certificate of cohabitation with the deceased
Non-working relatives must additionally provide proof of financial dependency.
Understanding these procedures and deadlines is crucial for families to secure this financial support during a difficult time. Being aware of one's rights and the necessary steps can prevent the loss of these funds and provide essential assistance.
In addition to the potential benefits of claiming unpaid pension funds, it's important to note that the government has also approved a one-time payment of 1500 Hryvnias for millions of Ukrainians this April. This initiative aims to provide financial support during challenging times, further emphasizing the importance of exploring all available financial assistance options for families navigating loss and hardship.
