TNT leakage from the submarine UC-30

A leak of TNT from the German submarine UC-30, which sank during World War I, has been discovered on the seabed of the North Sea. A study conducted by Professor Katrin Juul Andersen from Aarhus University as part of the NorthSeaWrecks project showed that explosives are entering the water and marine organisms. This problem is widespread, as over 10,000 sunken vessels lie in Danish waters, and hundreds of thousands of mines remain in the North Sea.

History of the submarine UC-30

UC-30 was a German submarine that was engaged in the war. In the spring of 1917, it turned back on a mission to Ireland due to a motor failure and, unfortunately, hit a British mine. It was carrying 18 mines and six torpedoes, and all 27 crew members died as a result of the explosion. The submarine UC-30 was accidentally found by a Danish diver.

The study involved military divers who collected samples of water, silt, mussels, and starfish from the hull of the submarine. Laboratory analysis revealed traces of TNT in the water and marine organisms. According to Andersen's calculations, approximately 15% of the sunken vessels in Danish waters are associated with the periods of the world wars. During World War I, around 190,000 mines were scattered in the North Sea, and over 25 ships went to the bottom during the Battle of Jutland, resulting in nearly 10,000 sailors' deaths.

Moreover, Germany is investing funds to clean the Baltic Sea from post-war ammunition dumps. Engineers warn that blind underwater explosions or careless salvage operations could harm the environment by stirring up clouds of toxins. The issue of explosive leakage from sunken vessels poses serious ecological concerns in the region.

The leakage of TNT from the sunken submarine UC-30 highlights the importance of ecological research in waters that were arenas of conflict during World War I.

This issue is becoming increasingly relevant as numerous sunken vessels and munitions remain on the seabed of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, which can threaten marine ecosystems. The leakage of hazardous substances can negatively impact marine life and the health of people who depend on these waters.
