Aikon: Breathing New Life into Vintage Phones
Emir Karşıyakalı, a developer from Turkey, has launched Aikon, an app that enables users of the Nokia 6300—a feature phone released in 2007—to access popular chatbots including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok. Compatible with devices running on S40 or S60 platforms, Aikon overcomes the limitations of aging hardware and the fading 2G networks that many carriers are phasing out. For instance, T-Mobile in the US is scheduled to shut down its 2G network by August 2026.
How Aikon Works
The app relies on a backend server written in Go, which communicates with chatbot APIs. This server condenses AI-generated responses into 8 KB chunks and retains messages for up to 30 days. Users must independently manage API request payments to use the service. Additionally, Aikon supports saving chatbot replies directly onto a memory card for offline viewing, optimized for the Nokia 6300’s 240×320 pixel screen.
Users can also send photos for analysis and record voice messages up to 30 seconds long, with voice-to-text conversion powered by OpenAI’s models. The interface is multilingual, offering support in eight languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Russian, Indonesian, and Turkish.
The app was originally named Claude S40, and its current name, Aikon, is a play on the word Nokia spelled backwards.
The source code and installation guidelines are publicly available on GitHub. However, due to the shutdown of 2G networks, Aikon will not function on the Nokia 6300 in the United States.
This project exemplifies a creative approach to extending the lifespan of outdated devices by integrating them with cutting-edge AI technology. While network limitations pose challenges in some areas, Aikon demonstrates how legacy hardware can be revitalized, offering inspiration for developers aiming to bridge old and new tech worlds.
