Starting from 2026, Ukrainians traveling to Schengen countries will face new requirements: the entry fee will increase to 20 euros due to the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This change proposed by the European Commission aims to replenish the EU budget but may complicate trips for Ukrainian citizens. This was reported by the publication Gazeta Express.
What is the ETIAS system
The ETIAS system, which will be operational by the end of 2026, is not a visa, but an electronic authorization for citizens of visa-exempt countries with the EU, including Ukraine. The authorization will be valid for three years or until the passport expires and will allow stays in Schengen for up to 90 days every 180 days.
The application process is simple and can be completed online, but the fee will increase from the initial 7 euros to 20 euros. Persons under 18 and over 70 will be exempt from payment, although they must still apply. Expected changes:
-
ETIAS fee: 20 euros for individuals aged 18–70.
-
Validity of authorization: 3 years or until passport expiration.
-
Operating countries: all Schengen states.
Change in entry rules to the EU from October 12, 2025
Moreover, starting from October 12, 2025, the EU will implement the Entry/Exit System (EES), which will replace passport stamps with digital records of biometric data – fingerprints and facial photos. This will apply to all non-EU residents, including Ukrainians, and will affect tourists and business travelers. The system will operate at all Schengen border crossing points, which may slow down border crossings in the initial months.
For Ukrainians who frequently travel to the Czech Republic, Poland, or other EU countries, these changes mean additional costs and the need to plan trips in advance. In 2022, after the outbreak of war, many Ukrainians received temporary protection in the EU, but for tourist or short-term visits, ETIAS will become mandatory.
Let us recall that earlier we presented the ranking of countries that tourists visit most often.
