A New Electric Pilot Boat

Artemis Technologies, based in Belfast, has introduced the EF-12 Pilot, the world’s first 100% electric hydrofoil pilot boat designed for zero emissions. Built to safely transfer pilots to large vessels, this craft leverages cutting-edge technology tailored to the specific demands of pilotage services.

Technical Specifications

The EF-12 Pilot is equipped with the Artemis eFoiler drive system, featuring carbon-fiber hydrofoils. It reaches a top speed of 32 knots—surpassing the typical 25-knot speed of conventional pilot boats in coastal waters. The vessel’s foiling range spans 45 to 55 nautical miles, and its batteries can be fully recharged in under an hour using an ultra-fast DC charging station.

This model also features active stabilization for height, roll, and pitch. Its specialized deep-V hull ensures wave stability, while reinforced panels and heavy-duty fenders absorb impacts when coming alongside large ships. As a rescue craft, it can self-right automatically even after capsizing.

Artemis Technologies CEO Iain Percy stated: 'Pilotage imposes very specific requirements on a vessel. The EF-12 Pilot applies proven hydrofoil technology to meet those needs, offering an efficient all-electric solution for pilots, crews, and port operations worldwide.'

The launch of this vessel is part of a broader push to electrify port infrastructure, where workboats are increasingly going green. The EF-12 Pilot’s impressive specs—even when compared to conventional boats—highlight progress in marine technology and Artemis Technologies’ commitment to sustainability. This development could open new doors for raising environmental standards in maritime transport and drive further innovation in the sector.
