Chernihiv Migration Department Resumes Operations

Before the full-scale invasion, the Chernihiv branch of the State Migration Service (SMS) in Chernihiv Oblast served over 52,000 residents across eight communities in the Chernihiv district. However, in early March 2022, a hostile aerial bomb destroyed the building. Despite the devastation, staff managed to evacuate all documentation, equipment, and hardware without losing a single passport record.

Following Chernihiv’s liberation in April 2022, the department was among the first to restart operations. Employees of the unit emphasized:

“Behind every document lies a human story.”
This underscores the importance of their work, as for many people, restoring documents provided a way to flee to safety, recover lost papers after shelling, or regain a sense of connection with the state.

New Location and Continued Support for Residents

On November 1, 2024, the Chernihiv SMS department began operating at a new address. This step marked a significant milestone in restoring administrative services for the region’s residents, who continue to need support and assistance.

For an English-speaking audience, this reopening is a tangible sign of resilience in a city that faced severe destruction early in the war. The resumption of services not only aids local residents but also signals progress toward normalcy in war-affected areas. Rebuilding administrative functions can help stabilize the situation and restore public trust in government institutions.
