In Chernivtsi, most buses transferred to the city from Prague are currently not on routes. The reason is banal, yet painful — a lack of drivers. At the same time, the city authorities are preparing to update the trolleybus fleet using loans and grants. This is reported by Chernivtsi Promin.
Public transport in Chernivtsi: why buses are not on routes
The city mayor Roman Klychuk spoke about the problems with public transport in Chernivtsi. According to him, this year the city purchased six new trolleybuses with city budget funds, and also received 15 buses as a gift from Prague.
However, only part of this transport is functioning:
-
of the 15 buses, only 6 are operating on routes;
-
9 buses are idle due to a lack of drivers.
The mayor emphasized that the staffing issue is currently key, and without solving it, even new transport does not yield the expected effect.
Plans for renewal in 2026
Roman Klychuk also reminded about the loan agreement with the European Investment Bank for the purchase of 37 trolleybuses. The document is at the signing stage, and the first deliveries are expected next year.
Additionally, the city has won a grant for 25 million euros, and the total funding for updating public transport could reach 45 million euros considering the city budget funds. According to the mayor, these resources are planned to be directed towards further development of the bus-trolleybus fleet.
