Grenade Attack in Storozhynets
On February 19, a resident of Storozhynets in the Chernivtsi region detonated a grenade as police attempted to detain him. The explosion injured two law enforcement officers with varying severity; one is reported to be in serious condition. The detained individual now faces charges under two articles of Ukraine's Criminal Code. This violent incident highlights the perilous conditions Ukrainian police often confront.
The event unfolded in the city of Storozhynets when the local man threw a combat grenade toward a police vehicle during the arrest attempt. The device detonated near the officers. Authorities report the suspect was intoxicated and attempted to flee after the blast but was apprehended by special forces.
Extensive Weapons Cache Uncovered
Subsequent searches of the suspect's residence and vehicle revealed a significant arsenal of weapons and explosives, including:
- over 300 rounds of ammunition of various calibers;
- three rounds for an under-barrel grenade launcher;
- hand grenades and detonators;
- five improvised explosive devices (IEDs);
- components for firearms.
All evidence has been sent for forensic examination. Bomb disposal experts were deployed to the scene to safely remove the ordnance.
The suspect has been formally notified of suspicion under Article 348 (encroachment on the life of a law enforcement officer) and Part 1 of Article 263 (illegal handling of weapons) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The case has generated considerable public concern, underscoring the dangers law enforcement personnel face daily.
