Financing Ukraine's Defense Purchases
The European Commission has decided to allocate 6.1 billion euros to Ukraine for defense purchases, coinciding with Ukraine's Independence Day. The funds will be directed towards the purchase of air defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radars. This financing is part of a credit support program for Ukraine totaling 90 billion euros.
The press release from the European Commission stated that the decision was prompted by the intensification of Russian attacks with ballistic missiles and reactive drones. Throughout July 2023, Russia carried out 376 missile strikes against Ukraine, emphasizing the need for ongoing support for the country's defense capabilities.
Previous Defense Procurement Plans
Earlier, the European Commission approved defense procurement plans amounting to 16 billion euros, of which Ukraine received 8.35 billion euros. Most of the products to be purchased will be supplied by defense companies in the European Union. To receive new funds, Ukraine must submit signed contracts with manufacturers, which will be subject to verification by the European Commission.
