Ukraine's day of remembrance for fallen defenders
Ukraine commemorates its fallen defenders — both men and women — on August 29, a date established by a presidential decree in 2019 and tied to the 2014 Ilovaisk tragedy. This year, cultural and educational institutions across the country joined the 'Remembrance Table' initiative, creating reserved tables, memory shelves, and dedicated spaces of tribute. Bookstores, theaters, libraries, and universities take part

At these venues, visitors could write the names and call signs of fallen soldiers on postcards. Readeat paid a separate tribute to a staff member who was killed during a combat mission. At the Zbirka bookstore, a memorial shelf was dedicated to actor and soldier Yurii Felipenko. Kateryna Motrych curated a selection of Felipenko's favorite books: Hermann Hesse's The Steppenwolf, George Orwell's 1984, Sun Tzu's The Art of War, and Homer's The Iliad.
The Theater on Podil also took part, setting up a reserved table in its foyer in memory of Vasyl Kukharskyi and Yurii Felipenko. The Wild Theater honored the fallen through a wreath ritual, an idea proposed this year by the civic organization Vshanuy. Participants hand-wove wreaths from live flowers, herbs, wheat ears, and sunflowers, then brought them to cemeteries, memorials, and Alleys of Glory.
The National Historical Library of Ukraine displayed publications from its collections and organized a symbolic space of honor with a reserved reading seat. The Scientific Library of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine prepared memorial tables in five academic buildings of its branch. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv arranged a remembrance table and remembered Iryna Tsybukh among the fallen. The Ukrainian Catholic University Library and the Taras Shevchenko Central Children's Library in Kyiv also joined the initiative.
The central ceremony took place at Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) in Kyiv during the National Moment of Silence, where a Remembrance Table was also set up. After the square event, participants moved to the Sens bookstore on Khreshchatyk for the wreath ritual. The Remembrance Table is an annual national campaign held on August 29 and organized by the Illia Hrabar Memorial Fund and the Memorial remembrance platform. Illia Hrabar was killed near Bakhmut. The tradition of setting a symbolic table originated in the United States and was introduced in Ukraine by Maria Hrabar. Sunflowers have become the symbol of this memorial day, while a candle represents a life cut short.
