New 70-Million-Year-Old Mosasaur Species Halisaurus auriculatus Discovered in Egypt

Discovery of a Previously Unknown Mosasaur Species

Paleontologists have uncovered a new mosasaur species, named Halisaurus auriculatus, in Egypt’s Dakhla Oasis. This marine reptile lived around 70 million years ago during the early Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous period. The fossils include a partial skull, jawbones, vertebrae, and limb bones, all remarkably preserved in three dimensions. Analysis reveals that Halisaurus auriculatus had notably long, slender jaws lined with over 20 teeth on each side. Unique among mosasaurs, this species also shows a highly specialized ear structure, suggesting distinctive sensory adaptations.

Comparing Halisaurus auriculatus with Halisaurus hebae

Both Halisaurus auriculatus and Halisaurus hebae were found in the same geological layer and region in Egypt. Halisaurus hebae was described by the same research team in 2023. The two species differ primarily in skull and jaw anatomy. One of the study’s authors explained:

“Halisaurus auriculatus stands apart from its contemporary Halisaurus hebae due to its elongated, narrow jaws, higher tooth count, and a uniquely specialized quadrate bone. These features suggest adaptations for quick biting with relatively low bite force, and possibly enhanced underwater hearing.”

Mosasauria were a diverse group of extinct marine reptiles from the Cretaceous period. Halisaurinae, the subfamily that includes Halisaurus auriculatus, is characterized by relatively small body size and more primitive jaw and tooth structures compared to other mosasaurs. Paleontologist Ahmed Ali Shaker noted:

“Historically, halisaurines have been among the rarest and least understood mosasaur groups.”

In a related discovery, a massive mosasaur species named Tylosaurus rex, reaching lengths of up to 12 meters and dating back about 80 million years, was found in the northern Texas region of the United States in 2026. The fossils of Tylosaurus rex were studied by scientists from the American Museum of Natural History, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, and Southern Methodist University.

The identification of Halisaurus auriculatus enriches our understanding of mosasaur evolution and diversity during the Late Cretaceous. It also highlights the significance of exploring under-researched locations like Egypt’s Dakhla Oasis, where new species with distinctive adaptations continue to emerge. As more mosasaur species are discovered, researchers gain deeper insights into the ecological roles these marine reptiles played and their interactions within ancient ocean ecosystems.
