The EU will expand the list of cars that can be driven with category B. Against the backdrop of driver's license reforms, exceptions for certain vehicles with a permitted maximum weight of up to 4.25 tons instead of the usual 3.5 tons are anticipated. This is reported by inPoland.

Category B for heavier vehicles: changes from November 2027

The new provisions will apply to vehicles that operate fully or partially on alternative fuel. This group includes electric vehicles, whose weight is increased by traction batteries.

For the relevant vehicles, the permitted maximum weight will increase to 4250 kg. This right will be available to drivers who have had category B for at least two years.

The main conditions are as follows:

  • the increased limit will apply to specified alternative fuel vehicles;

  • the driver must have held category B for at least two years;

  • the application of the relevant provisions in the EU is scheduled from November 26, 2027.

It specifically concerns the permitted maximum weight of the vehicle, not just its weight without cargo. The reform does not introduce a general permission to drive any vehicle up to 4.25 tons.

In Poland, some exceptions for heavier alternative fuel vehicles are already provided for by national regulations. At the same time, Ukrainians need to separately consider the procedure for recognition and exchange of driver's licenses.

Category B for campers: additional requirements from November 2029

For motorhomes with a permitted maximum weight of more than 3500 kg but not exceeding 4250 kg, a different procedure is provided. Simply having category B for two years will not be sufficient.

EU states will define additional requirements. These may include:

  • a training course lasting at least seven hours;

  • a practical exam;

  • a combination of training and examination.

The application of these provisions is scheduled from November 26, 2029. The timelines for vehicles powered by alternative fuel and campers differ, as stipulated in EU directive 2025/2205.

The European reform also does not imply an automatic change to Ukrainian categories. In Ukraine, a separate update of road legislation is being prepared, while the application of new possibilities in EU countries will depend on the relevant rules and recognition of the driver's license.
