Introducing the 'Wolf Trail': A New Long-Distance Hike

A massive new hiking route called the 'Wolf Trail' (Vovcha Stezhka) has opened in Europe, stretching 3,494 kilometers from Poland to Italy. This trek, developed by the outdoor brand Jack Wolfskin, links seven continuous stages and involves a total elevation gain of over 78,400 meters. Hikers should expect the full journey to take between four and six months, with the optimal travel window running from April through September. The route is built upon pre-existing historical paths, offering a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Stage-by-Stage Breakdown of the Wolf Trail

The Wolf Trail kicks off with a 428-kilometer section along Poland’s Baltic coast, running from Hel to Świnoujście. From there, hikers turn inland and cross into Germany. The second stage is a demanding 1,930-kilometer leg that starts in medieval cities like Rostock and winds through Switzerland all the way to the Austrian border. The third stage covers 392 kilometers through the Allgäu Alps, with possible stops in towns such as Innsbruck. The final stretch is particularly dramatic, following the 'Via Alpina' route through the Dolomites and Slovenia’s Triglav National Park, ending in Trieste, Italy.

In April 2026, Canadian professional hiker Lauren Roerick tested the trail for safety. Jack Wolfskin stitched together roughly 3,500 kilometers of existing historic paths, all routed through approved campsites, mountain huts, and local villages.

Local photographer and content creator Anna Heipel noted: 'While hiking is part of German tradition, our trails and loops aren’t designed for multi-day treks and wild camping—you can’t just pitch a tent anywhere.'

This highlights the need for careful planning and adherence to safety rules while tackling the Wolf Trail. Overall, the route offers a unique chance for hikers to immerse themselves in the nature and culture of six European countries, combining physical challenges with scenic rewards.

The Wolf Trail underscores the growing popularity of hiking tourism in Europe and the importance of protecting natural and cultural resources along the way. By linking existing trails, it allows travelers to gain a deeper experience while exploring the history and traditions of the regions it crosses. This could also boost local economies through increased tourism and promote eco-friendly travel.
