Recently, South Korea has become a key arms supplier for US allies in Europe amid the depletion of American stocks. This is reported by 'Glavkom' citing CNN.

Poland - South Korea's main customer

Poland, located on NATO's eastern flank and actively preparing for war with Russia, is South Korea's main customer.

In particular, Poland has completed a deal to acquire a second batch of 180 South Korean tanks as part of a 2022 deal, which will allow it to replenish its arsenal with nearly 1000 units of armored vehicles.

The Polish Ministry of Defense stated that the armored vehicles will partially replace the Soviet tanks that Poland transferred to Ukraine for the war with Russia. According to the Wilson Center in Washington, Poland has supplied Ukraine with more than 300 tanks, over 350 infantry fighting vehicles, and armored personnel carriers.

South Korea ranks 10th in global arms exports

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, South Korea has risen to 10th place in the world in arms exports over the past five years. During this period, Poland received 46% of South Korea's military exports, followed by the Philippines with 14% and India with 7%.

Given the protraction of the war in Ukraine and the war in Israel in the Gaza Strip, US military aid to Ukraine and Israel has led to the depletion of American arms stocks. Therefore, according to a 2024 report from the Stimson Center, South Korea is increasingly being considered as an option for US allies in need of arms.

New agreement between the US, NATO, and Ukraine on arms supplies

US President Donald Trump proposed selling NATO countries not only Patriot systems but also offensive weapons that could be handed over to Ukraine after sale. Previously, Trump disclosed details of a new agreement reached between the US, NATO, and Ukraine regarding the supply of American arms.

By the way, the US leader agreed to meet some of Ukraine's military aid requests that President Volodymyr Zelensky submitted to him last month. The shift in position came after months of skepticism from the White House regarding Ukraine and amid Trump's frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin's unwillingness to engage seriously in negotiations.

South Korea is becoming an increasingly important arms supplier for US allies in Europe, particularly Poland. Alongside this, the new agreement between the US, NATO, and Ukraine regarding the supply of American arms reflects changes in geopolitical ties and attempts to strengthen Ukraine's position in the region.
