France has tightened legalization rules for foreigners by introducing a mandatory civic test for obtaining a long-term residence permit or French citizenship. Without successfully passing the exam, it is no longer possible to submit documents for a residence permit or passport. This is reported by Visit Ukraine.
The new measure is officially explained by the need for better integration of migrants; however, in practice, the test has become yet another barrier in the legalization process. The new requirements have already sparked lively debates among human rights activists and foreigners who plan to stay in France for an extended period.
New civic test in France: main rules
The civic exam is mandatory for all foreigners applying for a long-term residence permit or citizenship. The test is conducted in a computer format at accredited centers and has clearly defined conditions:
-
40 test questions with answer options
-
45 minutes to complete
-
at least 80% correct answers to pass
-
cost of taking the test - from 100 to 200 euros
-
complete ban on the use of phones or aids
-
in case of rule violations - ban on retaking for up to two years
Formally, the number of attempts is not limited; however, each one is paid.
Exam for residence permit and citizenship in France: what is tested
The test covers not only basic knowledge about the country but also an understanding of the principles of how the state functions. The questions are divided into several thematic blocks:
-
values and principles of the French Republic
-
history of France
-
geography of the country
-
culture and social norms
-
state and European institutions
Particular attention is paid to the concepts of secularism of the state, the rule of law, and the democratic structure.
Critics of the reform emphasize that such a format does not always reflect the real level of a person's integration, instead creating additional formal barriers for those who are already working, studying, and living in France.
Let us remind you that the French government expanded the rights of Ukrainians who are in the country under temporary protection.
