Revival of Hôtellerie des Laquets
Perched at an altitude of 2,620 meters in the Pyrenees, the Hôtellerie des Laquets—the highest mountain hotel in France—has resumed operations after more than three decades of closure. Originally constructed between 1930 and 1933, the hotel ceased functioning in 1996 and only reopened following extensive renovations in late September 2026. The establishment now offers 16 guest rooms, a bar, and a restaurant, with a spa area scheduled to launch in December 2026. The restaurant’s menu is crafted by Michelin-starred chef Stéphane Tournier, known for his work at Les Jardins de l’Opéra in Toulouse.
Access to the Hotel
Visitors can reach Hôtellerie des Laquets by taking two cable cars: first ascending to the summit of Pic du Midi, then transferring to a separate lift that leads directly to the hotel. Standing at 2,877 meters, Pic du Midi is a renowned tourist destination that hosts the world’s oldest high-altitude astronomical observatory. The hotel is situated just 257 meters below this observatory. In 2013, Pic du Midi was designated France’s first international dark sky reserve, highlighting its significance for stargazing.
Room rates at Hôtellerie des Laquets start at 599 euros per night for a double occupancy with half-board. Select accommodations are located in the historic wing of the original 1930s structure, featuring private bathrooms and panoramic views of the Pyrenees. Guests also enjoy daily access to the on-site planetarium as part of their stay.
Besides this mountain retreat, 2026 will also see the opening of the new Waldorf Astoria London, Admiralty Arch. Housed in the Grade I-listed Admiralty Arch building, the hotel will offer 114 rooms and suites, some named to honor the building’s history and Britain’s naval heritage, including the Nelson Suite, St James’s Residence, and Victory Residence.
Looking ahead to 2027, a premium overnight train service launched by German startup Nox Mobility will connect Hamburg and Munich. Operating three times weekly in both directions with stops in Bremen and Augsburg, one-way tickets will start at 65 euros.
The reopening of Hôtellerie des Laquets marks a significant enhancement to the region’s tourism infrastructure, renowned for its breathtaking mountain landscapes and outdoor activities.
