Rodent Poison Sickens 10-Month-Old in Khust: Emergency Response Details

Удушаючі наслідки отруєння гризунам: 10-місячна дитина в Хусті потрапила до лікарні.

Infant Poisoning Incident in Khust

A 10-month-old infant was rushed to Khust Hospital by an emergency medical team on suspicion of ingesting rodent poison. The call reached the dispatch center in the morning, and the child was transported in stable, satisfactory condition. Authorities have been notified, and police are investigating the incident.

Acute poisonings rank as the fourth leading cause of child mortality in Ukraine. Children aged one to three are most vulnerable, accounting for approximately 40% of all household poisoning cases among minors.

Recent Poisoning Cases Across Ukraine

It is worth noting that Ukraine has recently seen several carbon monoxide poisoning incidents. In late December, a family in Bila Tserkva—including a 4-year-old child, a 45-year-old couple, and their daughter—was poisoned due to faulty gas equipment. Additionally, in December, a young couple died near Kyiv from carbon monoxide emitted by a generator.

Doctors are warning parents about the risks of household poisonings, which can result from:

  • medication overdoses,
  • accidental ingestion of adult drugs,
  • contact with household chemicals and pest control products.

To prevent such incidents, it is recommended to store all chemical substances in locked cabinets placed out of children's reach, ideally at a height they cannot access.

This case underscores the critical need for caution when handling potentially dangerous substances in homes, especially those with young children.

Prevention is key to child safety, and parents must remain vigilant about how and where they store chemicals. Taking these simple precautions can help avert future tragedies.

This alarming incident reflects a broader concern regarding child safety in Ukraine, particularly in light of recent accidents involving children. For instance, a garage explosion in Vinnytsia injured three young individuals, highlighting the potential dangers present in everyday environments.
