Spider Found Deep in Patient's Ear
During a routine examination in Ivano-Frankivsk, doctors discovered a spider lodged deep within a patient's ear canal. The patient had sought medical help complaining of a blocked ear. The examination revealed the spider had crawled almost all the way to the eardrum.
Medical Advice Following the Incident
Otolaryngologist Andriana Melnyk noted that such cases are common during the summer months. She also stressed the importance of proper ear hygiene.
“By completely removing earwax, you strip the ear of its natural protective barrier. Even in this patient's case, the spider managed to penetrate quite deeply—almost to the eardrum,” said Andriana Melnyk.
Doctors recommend seeing an otolaryngologist for a check-up at least once a year. Key hygiene tips include:
- Do not attempt to remove an insect by yourself.
- Avoid putting any liquids into the ear on your own.
Earwax serves as a protective barrier against dust, microorganisms, and insects. Excessive ear cleaning can be harmful, so moderation in ear care is crucial. While unusual, foreign objects in ears are a known issue for medical professionals globally.
This case highlights the need for caution and proper ear care, especially in summer when insect activity increases. Regular check-ups with an otolaryngologist can help avoid such unpleasant situations and maintain auditory health. Following simple hygiene rules can significantly reduce the risks associated with insects entering the ear.
