Weighing as Much as Several People: Fishermen Land the World's Biggest White Sturgeon (PHOTO)
In Canada, fishermen Sean North and Elvis Penton have caught the largest officially documented white sturgeon, measuring 356 centimeters in length. This new record surpasses the previous one, set in 2021, by 4 centimeters. The catch took place in the Fraser River, located in the province of British Columbia.
The white sturgeon is considered the largest freshwater fish in North America. Experts estimate that the fish caught by the anglers was born in the 1920s, making it over 100 years old. After being measured and photographed, the fish was released back into its natural habitat. This catch-and-release principle is part of a conservation program for the white sturgeon population, run by Sturgeon Slayers, a company that organizes professional fishing excursions.
Biodiversity Conservation Efforts
This event not only highlights a record-breaking achievement in fishing but also draws attention to biodiversity conservation efforts. Despite its advanced age, the white sturgeon serves as a symbol of evolutionary changes in aquatic ecosystems, and its preservation is critically important for maintaining the health of rivers.
