The season of large-scale road repairs has started in Kyiv, which has already significantly affected traffic. Due to restrictions on key highways, travel times have increased, and in some areas, the situation has become critical. This is reported by Apostrophe citing Vyacheslav Skryly, co-owner of the NGO “Passengers of Kyiv.”

Road repairs in Kyiv: where the largest traffic jams are

The most difficult situation has arisen in sections with the highest traffic. In particular, significant traffic jams are recorded:

  • near the metro station «Chernihivska»

  • on Kharkiv Highway.

Here, several factors have combined: intense vehicle flow and large-scale works. At the same time, restrictions on Holosiivskyi Prospect have not yet led to critical consequences.

Vyacheslav Skryly notes that overall, travel time in the city has already increased.

«There are major repairs, and the situation there is much worse due to high traffic and project deficiencies,» he explained.

Traffic jams in Kyiv: why traffic has worsened

Problems have become especially noticeable after the complete closure of traffic near the metro station «Chernihivska». The first morning rush hour showed serious delays for both drivers and public transport.

Disruptions have affected even the distant districts of the city. Additional difficulties have arisen for pedestrians: temporary routes have turned out to be inconvenient and dangerous, causing people to cross the road in unregulated places.

The expert believes that the situation could be partially alleviated, for example, by adding separate traffic light phases for pedestrians.

Road repairs in Kyiv: complaints about work organization

One separate problem is the scale of the repairs themselves. According to the expert, at «Chernihivska» instead of spot repairs, a full reconstruction of the intersection is actually being carried out, which delays work and worsens the situation.

Planning also did not take into account the needs of public transport. In particular, tram traffic has been completely halted, although it could have been preserved, as was done in other cities.

«The needs of public transport have been effectively ignored. Although there were solutions to preserve traffic, for example, through temporary tracks,» Skryly noted.

As a result, the season of repairs has not only complicated traffic but also revealed weak points in the approach to planning the transport infrastructure of the capital.

An increase in traffic jams means longer trips, additional time expenditure, and pressure on public transport, which is already operating at the limits of its capabilities.
