Kyiv's Heating Situation
As of the morning of January 29, 613 multi-story apartment buildings in Kyiv remain without heating. Repair crews are working around the clock on the damaged district heating networks following a series of attacks in January. Over the past day, heat has been restored to 124 buildings, yet the overall situation remains severe. This crisis highlights the vulnerability of urban infrastructure during wartime.
The number of affected buildings has been gradually decreasing; on the evening of January 28, the figure stood at 639 buildings, and earlier that morning, 737 residential buildings were without heat. Many of these reconnections are for buildings that were initially cut off following hostile attacks on January 9 and 20. The Desnianskyi district was hit particularly hard, becoming the epicenter of a utility crisis after the January 24 attack. In the Troieshchyna area, damage to infrastructure left roughly 600 high-rise buildings without electricity, water, and heating.
Forecasts and Response Measures
Temperatures in the capital are currently near freezing, and meteorologists forecast a sharp cold snap for the coming weekend. In response, city authorities are setting up additional emergency heating shelters to support residents suffering from the lack of basic services. Maksym Bakhmatov, head of the Desnianskyi District State Administration, has emphasized the urgent need to prepare building basements for the coming frost, a measure that could help prevent further infrastructure failures.
It is also important to note that since January 9, several buildings in the Teremky neighborhood have been without heating, and the dropping temperatures are now causing damage to water and sewage pipes. The citywide situation demands swift action to restore heating and ensure livable conditions for residents.
