Incident in Kyiv
A man died while being detained by police patrol officers in Kyiv. The incident occurred on February 8 at approximately 1:00 AM at a children's playground. Officers were responding to a report of a curfew violation, public alcohol consumption, and the use of obscene language. The caller described an aggressively behaving group of individuals who were disturbing the peace of local residents.
Upon arrival, patrol officers encountered a man who was threatening the inspectors and ignoring their commands. In response, the officers used physical force and handcuffs, citing Articles 44 and 45 of Ukraine's 'Law on the National Police'. Shortly after being restrained, the man fell ill and lost consciousness. The police officers removed the handcuffs, placed him in the recovery position, called an ambulance, and administered first aid.
Outcome and Public Reaction
Paramedics performed resuscitation efforts upon arrival, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. On February 14, 2026, the Kyiv Police released body camera footage from the patrol officers. The video shows the man confronting the officers before losing consciousness, after which the police attempted to resuscitate him.
This event has sparked significant public outcry, particularly in the context of other recent incidents in Kyiv, such as:
- The detention of a 29-year-old man who detonated a combat grenade during a conflict, resulting in one death and two injuries;
- In the Nemishayeve settlement, patrol officers used their service firearms to stop an aggressive man who threatened to detonate a grenade;
- In Khmelnytskyi, a man activated a hand grenade while making a romantic proposal, causing an explosion in an apartment.
The man's death during detention has provoked outrage among the public and activists, who are calling for a proper investigation into the police's actions.
