Kyiv's 202 Support Centers: Services Available During Power Cuts

Roman Prymush, Deputy Head of Ukraine's State Emergency Service, recently met with Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset. Their meeting took place at an 'Alaska'-type tent camp in Kyiv, which was established to support the population following Russian attacks. The discussion focused on the operation of assistance centers functioning in the capital during energy blackouts.

These support hubs have become vital for Kyiv residents needing aid amidst the difficult socio-economic conditions caused by the ongoing war. Currently, 202 assistance points are operational across 99 locations in the city, including ten organized as 'Alaska'-style tent camps. The Council of Europe delegation also visited a child-friendly space tent, organized by the State Emergency Service in cooperation with UNICEF.

At these assistance points, capital residents can access:

  • Warmth and heating
  • Electricity for charging devices
  • Communication and connectivity
  • Psychological support
  • Other essential services

This network is part of Ukraine's broader effort to maintain critical civilian infrastructure despite systematic attacks on its energy grid. Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed with Alain Berset the creation of a compensation mechanism for damages from Russian aggression, highlighting the importance of international support during this challenging period.

Their activity demonstrates how government authorities and international partners are combining efforts to ensure citizens' basic needs are met. The international recognition such initiatives receive is crucial, as it can foster further support for Ukraine from other nations.
