Nearly 10,000 Flu and Acute Respiratory Infections Recorded in Kyiv in a Single Week

За тиждень у Києві зареєстровано майже 10,000 випадків грипу та гострих респіраторних інфекцій.

Rising Cases of Influenza, ARIs, and COVID-19 in Ukraine’s Capital

Between April 20 and April 26, Kyiv reported 9,409 new cases of influenza, acute respiratory infections (ARIs), and COVID-19. This marks a 4% increase from the previous period, according to the Kyiv City State Administration, citing data from the Kyiv City Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health. The uptick translates to 364 more individuals falling ill compared to the prior week.

Of all new cases, 5,602 were children, while 3,807 were adults. School-aged children were particularly affected, with 3,395 cases recorded. Regarding COVID-19, only 13 adults contracted the virus out of the 9,409 total cases. Notably, no fatalities occurred during this period.

Hospitalizations Surge, Especially Among Children

The number of hospitalizations also climbed, with 152 patients admitted for influenza and ARIs—127 of whom were children. None of the COVID-19 patients required hospitalization. For context, between April 13 and April 19, 96 people were hospitalized, including 73 children, with no coronavirus admissions reported.

The Kyiv City State Administration noted that 'hospitalizations rose during the week. Medical facilities admitted 152 patients with flu and ARIs, including 127 children. No COVID-19 patients were hospitalized.'

In light of the rising infection rates, experts recommend the following preventive measures:

  • Flu vaccinations remain advisable throughout the entire season.
  • Check whether a COVID-19 booster dose has been received, especially for at-risk groups such as those with diabetes, obesity, or heart conditions.
  • Follow basic hygiene practices:
    • Wash hands with soap for at least 20 seconds after visiting public places.
    • Use hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol.
    • Avoid touching the face with unwashed hands.
    • Avoid large crowds in enclosed spaces.
    • Air out rooms for 5–10 minutes every hour.
    • Wear a mask in crowded places like the subway or queues without hesitation.

The surge in flu, ARI, and COVID-19 cases in Kyiv underscores the need for continued preventive efforts, particularly in schools where transmission risk is high. The hospitalization data—especially among children—highlights the importance of vaccination and adherence to hygiene standards to curb further virus spread. Monitoring these trends can also aid in planning medical resources and public health interventions.

While the recent spike in respiratory illnesses in Kyiv raises concerns, it is noteworthy that the weekly health report indicates a significant decline in cases across other regions. This contrast highlights the fluctuating nature of respiratory infections and underscores the importance of ongoing vigilance and preventive measures in the face of rising trends.
