Hot Meal System in Kyiv and the Region
In response to a severe energy crisis triggered by mass shelling, a network for providing hot meals has been established in Kyiv and the surrounding region. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) has deployed 41 field kitchens, four of which are dedicated to feeding rescue workers. Currently, 56 distribution points are operational within Kyiv itself, offering crucial support to residents during this difficult period. This humanitarian effort is a direct response to the widespread infrastructure damage caused by targeted Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy grid.
Partners and Meal Volumes
Meals for these sites are prepared by SESU partners, including the organizations World Central Kitchen and the Red Cross. Over the past week, more than 26,000 meal portions have been distributed to residents. A food truck in Brovary provides up to 16,000 daily portions, while in Irpin, a kitchen train operated by Ukrzaliznytsia prepares and distributes approximately 4,000 portions each day.
The mass shelling on January 24 caused serious damage to the capital's power grids, with the Desnianskyi district facing the most critical situation. The energy company DTEK has already announced it is switching to emergency operation modes to restore electricity. Ukraine's Minister for Communities and Territories Development, Oleksii Kuleba, also noted that a large shipment of generators is expected, with a new delivery due to arrive in Ukraine within the next week.
Given the aggressive actions that have led to significant power supply disruptions, providing the population with hot food has become a priority for authorities and humanitarian organizations. These measures aim to support those most affected by the consequences of shelling and blackouts, highlighting the combined efforts of the state and its partners to overcome the crisis. The anticipated generator deliveries may partially improve the electricity situation, but the need for humanitarian aid is expected to remain acute for the foreseeable future.
