Kyiv Cancels Seasonal Speed Increase, Maintaining 50 km/h Limit on All Major Roads

Київ зберігає обмеження швидкості на всіх основних трасах, не підвищуючи її на сезон.

Speed Limits in Kyiv

Kyiv will not implement its usual seasonal speed limit increase this year. From April 1 to November 1, 2023, a 50 km/h (approximately 31 mph) limit will remain in effect on all major roads in the capital. This decision follows a comprehensive review of the city's street and road network, where specialists assessed road sections using established methodology for setting speed limits.

This policy is part of a broader effort to improve road safety in Ukraine's capital, which faces significant traffic challenges. The road condition assessment took into account several key factors:

  • The presence of dedicated public transport lanes;
  • Areas with left-turn configurations;
  • Zones with limited visibility for drivers.

Traffic accident statistics from the previous year were also a major factor in this decision. In the Kyiv region alone, over two thousand accidents were recorded in 2025. Nationwide, Ukraine registered 25,934 injury-causing accidents last year, resulting in 3,249 fatalities and 31,898 injuries.

Reasons for the Speed Restriction

An additional reason for maintaining the lower speed limit is the planned road repair work scheduled for the spring and summer period. Furthermore, the capital's automated traffic enforcement cameras are already calibrated for the 50 km/h limit, aiming to enhance overall traffic safety.

The primary causes of accidents in the Kyiv region remain:

  • Exceeding safe and posted speed limits;
  • Violations of maneuvering rules;
  • Failure to obey rules for navigating intersections.

Implementing the 50 km/h limit in Kyiv is a measure aimed at improving road safety amid rising accident rates. The decision also accounts for the potential impact of necessary repair work on major highways. The use of automated cameras is intended to improve compliance with the speed limit and reduce the number of accidents on the city's roads.

As the city implements this speed limit measure, it's also essential to note the upcoming road closures for maintenance scheduled for March 25. These repairs are crucial for maintaining road quality and safety, further emphasizing the need for a consistent speed limit to protect drivers during the construction period.
