Kyiv’s First Watermelons and Melons Hit Store Shelves
Grocery chains across Kyiv have started selling the season’s first watermelons and melons in bulk. Because whole fruits are expensive, retailers are now offering pre-cut options. Supermarkets wash, slice, and package the produce—halves, quarters, or individual wedges—wrapped in plastic film.
At Silpo, a standard striped watermelon costs 64.99 UAH per kilogram. A half of such a watermelon runs about 248–268 UAH. A single piece weighing roughly 1.5 kg sells for nearly 99 UAH. Sliced watermelon wedges are priced at 54.90 UAH per kilo, while a pack of six ready-to-eat slices weighs in at 36.56 UAH. The premium Style variety goes for 99 UAH per kilogram, though its undiscounted price recently hit 129 UAH. Half a Style watermelon will set shoppers back 183.55 UAH.
As for melons, imported Valencia melons are selling at 119 UAH per kilogram. A portion tray with five pieces of this variety costs 50.22 UAH. This practice of cutting and packaging melons is not limited to Silpo—Auchan, ATB, and Eco Market are also doing it.
Cabbage Prices Spike
Separately, cabbage has become sharply more expensive in Ukraine. White cabbage prices have jumped 50% and now range from 12 to 20 UAH per kilogram—about 52% higher than at the end of last workweek. Farmers attribute the rise to reduced supply during the seasonal transition.
So, Kyiv consumers can choose from various watermelon and melon buying options while also keeping an eye on price shifts for other vegetables like cabbage.
Current watermelon and melon prices reflect changing shopping habits among Ukrainians, who are opting for pre-cut fruit as whole produce becomes costly. This points to a new retail trend where convenience is a top priority. The surge in cabbage prices also highlights seasonal market fluctuations that may influence buyer decisions in the near future.
As consumers explore options for fresh produce, it's important to note the recent fluctuations in vegetable prices. For instance, the significant increase in cabbage prices has raised concerns among shoppers, highlighting the impact of seasonal changes on the market. Understanding these trends can help buyers make informed choices while navigating the current produce landscape.
