Free Skin Cancer Screenings Kick Off This Week in Kyiv

Безкоштовні обстеження на рак шкіри стартують у Києві цього тижня.

Ukraine Observes Melanoma Day

Melanoma Day is marked on May 11, aiming to raise awareness about this dangerous form of skin cancer. As of 2025, 4,255 patients in Kyiv are under oncological care for malignant melanoma. In 2024, the capital recorded 303 new cases, a figure that rose to 308 in 2025. During the first quarter of 2025 alone, 34 new melanoma patients were identified.

Notably, 85% of skin cancer cases in Kyiv’s medical facilities are detected during routine check-ups, yet 7–8% are diagnosed at an advanced stage. The highest number of melanoma patients falls within the 70–80 age group, accounting for 30% of all cases.

A Week of Free Skin Cancer Screenings

From May 11 to 17, Kyiv is hosting a week of free skin cancer diagnostics. Screenings take place at Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 4, located at 72 Saksahanskoho Street. The Kyiv City Clinical Oncology Center is at 69 Verkhovynna Street. For appointments or more information, call (044) 365-04-10.

Volodymyr Prokopiv stressed the importance of preventive exams, stating: 'Our goal is to minimize the percentage of advanced cases by spreading information and creating convenient conditions for screenings.'

Additionally, Tetiana Mostepan urged Kyiv residents to avoid self-treatment, emphasizing that 'the capital is holding skin cancer screening campaigns. This is an excellent opportunity to get a free check-up, where specialists will quickly and professionally address any suspicious moles.'

This free diagnostic week represents a crucial step in the fight against melanoma and in boosting public awareness of the disease’s risks. Research shows that early detection can significantly reduce melanoma mortality, making such initiatives vital not only for identifying illnesses but also for fostering healthy habits among the population. Continuing these efforts could help lower melanoma incidence rates in the future.

In addition to the upcoming free skin cancer screenings in Kyiv, there are other significant health initiatives taking place. Recently, the Health Ministry and the National Cancer Institute announced a series of free cancer diagnostics and vaccinations at the Courage Bazaar. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance public health and combat cancer effectively.
