In Kyiv, the average taxi ride costs 11 times more than a public transport ticket. Before the fare increase for public transport, the difference was as much as 36 times. The change in the fare for public transport in Kyiv has significantly reduced this gap.
These results were obtained in a study by KOSHT and the Bolt service, which compared prices in 27 European capitals. This is reported by Kosht.media.
Mobility Index in Kyiv after the fare increase in July 2026
In July, the cost of a single trip on public transport in Kyiv increased from 8 to 30 UAH. After this, the ratio of the average price of a taxi ride to the ticket price decreased from 36:1 to 11:1.
To calculate the Mobility Index, researchers compared the average cost of a 5-6 km ride on Bolt with the price of a standard public transport ticket in each city. Accordingly, the indicator demonstrates the difference between these modes of transportation, not the average price of all taxi rides.
Where taxi fares are higher than public transport in European capitals
Capitals were divided into three groups based on the price ratio:
-
4-6 times: Berlin, Helsinki, Stockholm, Lisbon, Oslo, Amsterdam, and Vienna. In these cities, taxis are relatively more affordable compared to public transport.
-
7-11 times: Kyiv, Prague, Paris, Madrid, Budapest, Warsaw, and London. Taxis here can be convenient for certain trips but are significantly more expensive than the ticket.
-
12 times and more: including Athens, Dublin, and Chisinau. In this group, the price difference is the largest.
Thus, Kyiv found itself at the upper limit of the average group: taxis here are 11 times more expensive than public transport. At the same time, passengers' choices are influenced not only by prices but also by travel time, route availability, and the ability to reach the desired destination. Taxi fares can also change depending on demand, particularly during the most expensive hours for taxis.
