Vandals Destroy Tulip Beds Donated by the Netherlands in Kyiv

У Києві пошкоджено клумби з тюльпанами, які подарували Нідерланди.

Acts of Vandalism in Kyiv

On the night of April 29, deliberate damage to flower beds was reported in Kyiv. Unknown individuals destroyed tulip displays in the Shevchenkivskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts. Most of the affected tulips were a gift to Kyiv from Dutch partners, including Smit Flowers and Flower Planet, with support from the Honorary Consulate of Ukraine in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This incident highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining public green spaces amid the war.

Damaged Locations and Official Response

According to municipal services, vandalism occurred at several sites:

  • Serhii Vynohradskyi Square
  • Chestnut Boulevard
  • Lviv Square
  • Artem Sokhan Square
  • Brest Avenue

The perpetrators uprooted the flowers, trampled them, and scattered debris across the beds, causing significant harm to the city's greenery.

Municipal workers contacted the police and documented the damage. The Kyiv City State Administration noted that surveillance cameras are installed in public areas, and efforts are underway to identify those responsible. Restoration work has already begun to restore the city's floral beauty.

This incident has sparked outrage among residents and supporters of urban greening initiatives. The destruction of tulips donated from abroad underscores not only an act of vandalism but also a disregard for international relations and cooperation.

While restoring the flower beds may take time, it is crucial that such acts do not go unpunished and that the perpetrators are held accountable.

This incident of vandalism is not an isolated case in Ukraine, as similar acts of aggression have been reported in other cities. For instance, in Lviv, a mosque was targeted with Molotov cocktails, prompting a criminal investigation by local authorities.
