A new public space for walking and relaxation has appeared in Kyiv. The Vilnius Square has opened in Obolon along with a pedestrian bridge, created as part of the collaboration between the capitals of Ukraine and Lithuania. The project was funded by the Vilnius city hall, which allocated 600 thousand euros for its implementation. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko announced this.
Where the Vilnius Square and new bridge opened in Kyiv
The new space has been arranged in part of the park on Pryrichna Street in the Obolon district of the capital.
The opening was attended by Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko, Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas, and the Ambassador of Lithuania to Ukraine Inga Stanikė-Tolochkėnė.
The central element of the project is the pedestrian bridge over the bay, the architectural concept of which is inspired by the King Mindaugas Bridge in Vilnius.
How much Vilnius allocated for the creation of the square in Kyiv in 2026
According to Vitaliy Klitschko, the Vilnius city hall allocated 600 thousand euros for the implementation of the project in 2026.
Funding was provided with the assistance of the Central Project Management Agency of Lithuania.
The city authorities emphasize that the new square has become a symbol of years of partnership between Kyiv and Vilnius, as well as support for Ukraine from Lithuanian partners.
Why the Vilnius Square in Obolon has social significance
During the development of the project concept, three stages of public consultations with local residents were held.
The Kyiv City State Administration notes that the creation of new green areas is especially important during the war, as such spaces contribute to the restoration of people's emotional state and to maintaining psychological resilience.
After the opening, the delegation walked through the Vilnius Square, Obolon Island, and the 'Wave' bridge.
How Vilnius helps Kyiv during the war
Collaboration between the cities has been ongoing for several years. In 2023, Vilnius donated 20 generators, gas stoves with cylinders, chargers, batteries, flashlights, and thermal clothing to Kyiv.
In addition, the Lithuanian capital transferred 500 thousand euros to the Future Kyiv charitable fund. In 2026, Vilnius allocated 80 thousand euros for the purchase of solar panels for the Kyiv nursing home for labor veterans.
It should be noted that in Kyiv, partial traffic restrictions were introduced on one of the key transport arteries of the Pechersk district for almost a month.
