Rescue Operation in Darnytskyi District Saves Trapped Badger
In the Bortnychi area of Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, emergency responders freed a badger that had become trapped inside a flooded cable collector well. The animal had been clinging to wires for an extended period but, fortunately, escaped without serious injury. No hospitalization was required, and the badger was quickly transported to a nearby forest—likely its original habitat—and released.
Once the well was cleared, communications workers were able to begin repairing cables damaged by the flooding. Volunteers emphasized the importance of safety, urging the public to cover open or damaged manhole covers to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Separate Incident: Turtle Named Philip Rescued in Odesa
This rescue is not an isolated case. On April 24, during a nighttime Russian shelling in Odesa, a residential building was destroyed. Beneath the rubble on Mechnykova Street, a turtle named Philip was trapped. Its owner, Tamara, anxiously hoped for its safe recovery. Rescuers successfully saved Philip, highlighting the bravery and dedication of emergency personnel.
As the animal rescuers noted: 'Hospitalization wasn’t needed, but its personality came through right away—it started actively dismantling the carrier. So we quickly took the furry one to the nearest forest, where it likely came from. And it—he or she—went off to live its best badger life.'
However, volunteers also cautioned that 'not all such stories end this well.'
These events underscore the critical role of rescue services in society, which not only assist people but also take responsibility for saving animals in life-threatening situations. Cases like the badger and turtle rescues demonstrate both the heroism of first responders and serve as reminders to practice everyday safety to avoid dangerous scenarios. Society must recognize the importance of protecting both humans and animals, as they too need our help and support.
The recent rescue of the badger in Kyiv mirrors another remarkable animal recovery in Ukraine.
