Fatal Incident at Verkhnie Vyhurivske Lake
Authorities in Kyiv's Desnianskyi district have recovered the body of a teenager from Verkhnie Vyhurivske Lake, one day after he drowned on June 11. The State Emergency Service (SES) received a report of the boy's disappearance at 10:41 PM. Preliminary information indicates the teen dove underwater and never resurfaced.
The victim's body was discovered on June 12 at a depth of 6 meters, approximately 20 meters from the shore. This tragedy comes less than a year after a woman drowned in the same lake, whose body was found 15 meters from the shore at a depth of 3 meters.
Earlier this year, in late May, two foreign nationals—men aged 20 and 25—died in the Hydropark area after jumping from a pier into the Dnipro River. These incidents underscore a troubling pattern of water-related fatalities in the region.
Law enforcement is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the latest drowning. Kyiv's SES is urging all visitors near bodies of water to act responsibly, emphasizing that water safety is a critical issue that must not be overlooked.
Water Safety Reminders
This tragic event highlights the need to follow safety guidelines while enjoying time near lakes, rivers, and other water bodies. Officials warn that ignoring basic precautions can lead to deadly outcomes. Given the recent string of accidents, society must focus on raising awareness about water safety and personal accountability during recreation.
This recent tragedy is part of a worrying trend of drowning incidents in Kyiv's recreational areas. For instance, just a few weeks prior, two foreign nationals lost their lives in the Hydropark after a similar mishap.
