Court Delivers Verdict in Kyiv Robbery Case
A 34-year-old man originally from the Chernihiv region has been sentenced to 9 years and 1 month in prison by the Shevchenkivskyi District Court in Kyiv for a robbery involving tear gas. The incident occurred in late February on Tabirna Street in the Shevchenkivskyi district. During the attack, the perpetrator sprayed gas from a canister into the victim’s face, then stole two mobile phones and cash. The defendant's prior criminal record was a factor in the court’s decision.
Investigators from the Shevchenkivskyi Police Department charged the suspect under Part 4 of Article 186 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers robbery committed under martial law. The court found him guilty and handed down a prison term of 9 years and 1 month.
Rising Crime in the Capital
In a separate case, a 32-year-old Kyiv woman was caught stealing jewelry worth 200,000 Ukrainian hryvnias from stores by posing as a customer. Police also arrested a man who robbed an 18-year-old in broad daylight. These incidents highlight a broader uptick in criminal activity across the city, as well as the intensified efforts of law enforcement to combat it.
These cases reflect a certain escalation of crime in Kyiv, which may be linked to socioeconomic factors affecting public safety during wartime. At the same time, the proactive measures taken by police and the imposition of strict sentences signal the state's commitment to maintaining order and protecting citizens. Ongoing monitoring and rapid response by authorities will be essential to prevent further increases in crime.
In light of the recent verdicts, the growing concerns about public safety in Kyiv are becoming increasingly evident. Another case that caught attention involved a street robbery where a woman was targeted, resulting in a 6.5-year sentence for the perpetrator. Such incidents underscore the pressing need for effective law enforcement strategies to combat rising crime rates in the capital.
