Conviction for Setting Fire to Railway Relay Cabinets

In March 2025, a 24-year-old native of the Donetsk region was convicted in Kyiv and sentenced to 15 years in prison for setting fire to relay cabinets belonging to Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's state railway operator. The crime was classified as an act of sabotage under Article 113, Part 2, and Article 28, Part 2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code. In addition to the prison term, the court ordered the confiscation of all the convict's property and demanded compensation for damages totaling 269,000 hryvnias.

Case Details

Court documents reveal that the arsonist first contacted the person who commissioned the act via Telegram in November 2024. According to investigators, a reward of $300 was offered for burning down two relay cabinets located near the Darnytsia railway station. The case of another individual involved in the crime is still pending before the court.

The press service of the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office announced the verdict, emphasizing that the sentence reflects the severity of the offense and its impact on critical infrastructure.

This incident underscores the ongoing importance of safeguarding critical infrastructure in Ukraine, particularly amid current security challenges. The court's ruling demonstrates law enforcement's firm commitment to combating sabotage and other crimes that could threaten national stability. Future investigations and trials involving other suspects in this case may help shape legal precedents for similar offenses.

The recent conviction highlights a troubling trend of arson targeting vital infrastructure in Ukraine. In a similar case, harsh sentences were also imposed for arson attacks against both Ukrainian railways and military vehicles. These incidents underscore the urgent need for robust measures to protect critical assets amid ongoing security threats.
