Arrest of a Courier in the Capital
Authorities in Kyiv have detained a 17-year-old courier who was sent to collect $31,800 from a 71-year-old former member of Ukraine's first convocation parliament. Acting on instructions from a 20-year-old man based in Odesa, the teenager approached the elderly ex-deputy under the false pretense of an SBU security check. Both young men now face suspicion of aiding fraud, and the victim's savings were recovered and returned to him.
What the Investigation Revealed
The case has been overseen by juvenile prosecutors from the Darnytsia district prosecutor's office in Kyiv. The 17-year-old was brought into the scheme by the Odesa resident through Telegram, where he received a photo of the pensioner and detailed instructions: keep $600 for himself and transfer the remaining amount through a currency exchange point into a crypto wallet.
Police moved in before the courier could complete the transfer, preventing any financial loss for the 71-year-old victim. Interestingly, both suspects are involved in sports and share mutual acquaintances, pointing to a personal connection within their criminal circle.
This incident highlights a growing problem in Ukraine, where fraudsters employ ever-changing tactics to deceive trusting citizens.
