Foreign National Apprehended in Kyiv

Police in Kyiv have detained a 47-year-old foreign man who, while heavily intoxicated, threatened passersby with an F-1 hand grenade. The incident occurred near a residential building on Akademika Yefremova Street. The suspect was in a drunken state when he made threats against people nearby while holding the live grenade. Officers seized the F-1 grenade during the arrest.

The detention was carried out under Article 208 of Ukraine's Criminal Procedure Code. The man has been formally notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which concerns the illegal handling of ammunition. This article carries a potential prison sentence of three to seven years. A pre-trial investigation is currently underway.

Other Recent Grenade Incidents

This is not an isolated case involving grenades in recent weeks. On March 20 at approximately 3:30 PM, an F-1 grenade exploded in the village of Semenivka, Shevchenkivska community, Kupiansk district, killing one man and severely injuring a woman, who required the amputation of both her legs. In a separate earlier incident, Kyiv police detained a 37-year-old local resident who detonated a grenade fuse inside an apartment in the Dnipro district.

“Under the procedural guidance of the Svyatoshyn District Prosecutor's Office, the detainee has been notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – illegal handling of ammunition,” police representatives stated.

These grenade-related incidents highlight the serious issue of illicit weapons circulation in Ukraine, a concern for both the public and law enforcement. The F-1 is a Soviet-era fragmentation grenade commonly found in the region. The increase in such cases may indicate a need for stricter controls on explosives and more effective safety measures to prevent similar situations in the future.

The recent incident involving a foreign national in Kyiv underscores the alarming trend of grenade-related events in the city.
