Man Arrested for Selling Fake Disability Status

Authorities in Kyiv have detained a man who used the OLX online marketplace to offer fraudulent disability certifications for a fee of $9,000. The suspect promised clients assistance in obtaining removal from military registration and securing fake disability status, claiming he had connections with healthcare workers and officials from military medical commissions at territorial recruitment and social support centers. This case highlights ongoing challenges with corruption related to military service obligations in Ukraine.

The arrest was carried out under Article 208 of Ukraine's Criminal Procedure Code. During a search of the suspect's vehicle, an F-1 combat grenade was discovered. The 34-year-old man has been notified of suspicion for illegal handling of ammunition. He also faces charges of extortion and obtaining unlawful benefit for assistance in acquiring disability status, with his actions classified under Part 3 of Article 369-2 of Ukraine's Criminal Code.

Prosecutorial Oversight and Related Cases

The Holosiivskyi District Prosecutor's Office of Kyiv is providing procedural guidance for this case. Notably, a separate recent case in the Kyiv region exposed an inspector from a national nature park's conservation fund who was also receiving unlawful benefits. That official promised to influence decisions on mobilization deferrals by offering fake employment at a critical infrastructure enterprise for draft exemption purposes.

The arrest of this man selling fake disabilities is part of a broader crackdown on corrupt schemes in Ukraine, particularly in the context of mobilization. The discovery of such cases indicates increased activity by law enforcement to detect and halt illegal practices that could threaten the country's defense capabilities. This situation underscores the importance of strengthening oversight over disability certification processes and other social services to prevent abuse and protect the legitimate interests of citizens.

This incident is part of a wider trend, as authorities intensify their efforts against fraudulent practices related to military service in Ukraine. For example, a recent case involved a Kyiv man who was arrested for selling false clergy statuses to help individuals evade military obligations. Such schemes not only undermine the integrity of the military system but also pose serious legal risks for those involved.
