Restoration of Kyiv’s Okhmatdyt Medical Complex Completed
The comprehensive reconstruction of the National Children’s Specialized Hospital "Okhmatdyt" in Kyiv has been finalized following damage from a Russian missile attack on July 8, 2024. The total project cost reached approximately 278.5 million hryvnias, reflecting savings exceeding 93 million hryvnias compared to the initial budget.
The missile strike severely impacted the modern hospital building’s structure, damaging the roof, facade, windows, doors, and critical engineering systems. The renovation involved extensive repairs, including:
- Restoration of the building’s exterior components;
- Upgrading interior finishes and utility networks;
- Replacing systems for medical gases, fire alarms, video communications, and lighting.
All hospital departments that had relocated to temporary sites during the reconstruction have now returned to the updated facility.
The actual construction expenses amounted to about 272.1 million hryvnias. When factoring in adjustments to project documentation, along with architectural and technical oversight, the overall restoration cost was approximately 278.52 million hryvnias. This is significantly below the original projected expense of 367.45 million hryvnias, marking a cost reduction of 93.35 million hryvnias.
Ongoing Recovery Efforts and Innovations
Work continues on repairing other damaged hospital buildings. Plans are underway to replace the old surgical building with a new structure, while historic buildings will be restored and adapted to meet contemporary medical standards. The "Okhmatdyt – Healthy Childhood" foundation has showcased the restoration achievements. Notably, solar power stations have been installed, enabling the hospital to generate its own electricity and enhance energy independence.
Furthermore, the hospital has launched applications for the Leontieva Medical Scholarship, named in honor of a doctor who tragically lost her life during the missile attack.
The rebuilding of Okhmatdyt’s medical and diagnostic complex represents a crucial step in restoring Ukraine’s healthcare infrastructure after repeated assaults. The completion of these efforts and the return of departments to the modern facility highlight the combined commitment of the government and community to delivering vital pediatric healthcare.
Future plans for restoring older buildings and integrating new technologies, such as solar energy, demonstrate the hospital’s dedication to sustainable growth amid ongoing challenges.
