Emergency Restoration Underway at Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
As of June 16, emergency repair crews are still working at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra after a Russian attack ignited a blaze that burned for more than 24 hours. The fire, which broke out following a direct hit on the Dormition Cathedral—a UNESCO World Heritage site—has prompted round-the-clock efforts to temporarily seal the roof before potential rainfall. Firefighters have been dismantling hazardous and damaged roof structures since the flames were extinguished at 8:45 a.m.
According to Pavlo Petrov, spokesperson for the Kyiv State Emergency Service,
“Yesterday, from the moment the fire was put out—if I’m not mistaken, at 8:45—rescuers immediately began restoration work. They even worked through the night to get ahead of any rain and cover the roof as quickly as possible. Teams focused on removing dangerous and obstructing damaged roof elements.”

A five-story residential building in the Pechersk district was hit, while in the Obolon district, a residential structure sustained damage between its third and fourth floors.
