Kyiv's Pechersk Lavra Showcases a Rare 18th-Century Baroque Icon

Унікальна барокова ікона XVIII століття в Київській Печерській Лаврі

Exhibition of an 18th-Century Baroque Icon

The National Sanctuary 'Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra' is currently hosting a display of an 18th-century Baroque icon as part of its 'Single Exhibit Exhibition' project. This icon originates from the Epiphany Cathedral of the Brotherhood Monastery in Podil and stands as a rare artifact of Ukrainian art. The exhibition will be open to the public until April 24, offering visitors a unique opportunity to view this exceptional work. Such exhibitions are a vital part of Ukraine's ongoing efforts to preserve and share its cultural heritage, especially during challenging times.

The event was timed to precede the Feast of the Annunciation, highlighting its significance within the cultural calendar. The exhibition is curated by Maryna Lutskyk, with art historian Inna Ivakina also contributing to the preparation of the display. The majority of similar works created in Ukraine during the 18th century have been lost over the centuries, making this surviving piece particularly valuable for understanding the nation's artistic legacy.

Sanctuary Visiting Hours

The National Sanctuary 'Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra' is located at 9 Lavrska Street. Until April 1, the sanctuary is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM; from April 1 onward, hours will be from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The 'Single Exhibit Exhibition' provides a focused look at Ukrainian art, embodying the nation's rich cultural heritage for both local and international visitors.

This exhibition represents a significant step in preserving and promoting Ukrainian cultural heritage, allowing a broad audience to engage with the artistic achievements of the past. The involvement of prominent curators and art historians underscores the serious approach taken in organizing these displays and their contextual importance in Ukraine's contemporary cultural life.

In addition to the ongoing exhibition of the Baroque icon, the recent reopening of the Near Caves at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra offers visitors a chance to explore more of the sanctuary's rich history. This reopening, following a prolonged closure, enhances the cultural experience for those attending the exhibition, providing further insights into the artistic and spiritual heritage of Ukraine.
